Prof. Ricardo Gudwin is actually an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, State University of Campinas - Brazil. He was born in Campinas-SP, Brazil, in 1967, and received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1989, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1992 and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1996, all of them from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, State University of Campinas - Brazil. His earlier research interests include fuzzy systems, neural networks and evolutionary systems. His current research interests include the study of intelligence and intelligent systems, intelligent agents, semiotics, computational semiotics and artificial cognition. He published an edited book with the tittle "Artificial Cognition Systems" (in conjunction with Angelo Loula and João Queiroz - July 2006 - Idea Group Publishing - ISBN 1-59904-111-1), and is working on a second book with the tittle  "Semiotics and Intelligent Systems Development" (to be published in December 2006). Prof. Gudwin is the head of the "Computational Semiotics Group", and Scientific Member/Director of the Group for Research on Artificial Cognition within the DCA/FEEC/UNICAMP, a member of the board of governors of the SEE - Semiotics-Evolution-Energy Virtual Institute in Toronto, Canada, and a member of the editorial board of the "On Line Journal for Semiotics, Evolution, Energy Development" - ISSN 1492-3157, published by the SEE Virtual Institute. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal "Controle & Automação", published by the SBA - Brazilian Society for Automation from Sept. 2004 - Dec. 2008.

Ricardo Ribeiro Gudwin é professor associado no Departamento de Engenharia de Computação e Automação Industrial, da Faculdade de Engenharia Elétrica e de Computação, da Universidade Estadual de Campinas - DCA/FEEC/UNICAMP. Obteve sua graduação em Engenharia Elétrica (1989), Mestrado em Engenharia Elétrica (1992), Doutorado em Engenharia Elétrica (1996), e Livre Docência em Engenharia de Computação (2003), todos os títulos pela FEEC/UNICAMP. Atua na área de sistemas inteligentes, tendo apresentado contribuições nas áreas de sistemas e lógica fuzzy, redes neurais e sistemas evolutivos. Tem, recentemente, investigado o relacionamento da semiótica com sistemas inteligentes, e contribuido para a formação da nova área de estudos Semiótica Computacional, onde tem participado intensamente junto à comunidade científica internacional. Suas áreas de interesse incluem o relacionamento entre a semiótica e sistemas inteligentes, semiótica computacional e síntese semiótica, agentes inteligentes e a simulação de agentes inteligentes em ambientes de realidade virtual. Mais recentemente tem trabalhado na área de "Cognição Artificial" e na fronteira entre  Semiótica e Ciência Cognitiva. Publicou recentemente o livro "Artificial Cognition Systems"  pelo Idea Group Publishing (junto com Angelo Loula e João Queiroz - Julho de 2006 - ISBN ISBN 1-59904-111-1), e está concluindo a edição de um segundo livro com o título "Semiotics and Intelligent Systems Development", também pelo Idea Group (previsão de publicação - Dezembro/2006). É o coordenador do "Computational Semiotics Group" e diretor científico do "Group for Research on Artificial Cognition", DCA/FEEC/UNICAMP. Além disso, é membro do "board of governors" do "SEE - Semiotics-Evolution-Energy Virtual Institute" em Toronto, Canadá e membro do comitê editorial da revista "On Line Journal for Semiotics, Evolution, Energy Development" - ISSN 1492-3157, publicado pelo SEE Virtual Institute. Além disso, foi o editor geral da revista Controle & Automação, revista da SBA - Sociedade Brasileira de Automática, de setembro de 2004 a dezembro de 2008.
